cities on hills

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5.13-16, NIV

John Piper is well known in the mission community for writing, “worship is the fuel and goal of missions.” (Let the Nations be Glad! Grand Rapids: Baker, 1993, pg 219.) As WFI continues to work and grow toward our goal of musicians everywhere stirring the heart’s longing for God through short-term missions, we realize we also need to develop the process of fueling our work. cities on hills is one of the ways we invite you to help fuel our missions as well as your own.

We believe our worship and prayer go beyond the songs we sing and the words we say. An unseen spiritual reality accompanies what we can do in the physical world. As we engage in earnest worship of God and prayer to God, we – and the world around us – are changed. Times of corporate worship and prayer can definitely fuel our international missions, but they can also strengthen us to be missional "lights" in our daily lives.

cities on hills is not a program. It is a movement to gather the Church of God in unified effort to fuel the Church of God for His mission fulfilled and His glory displayed. It is for churches, campus fellowships, small groups, worship teams, and any other gathering of Christ-followers who desire to participate in all aspects of fulfilling His Great Commission.

Through cities on hills, WFI would like to encourage you to mobilize as many people as possible for the mission of God simply by providing a time focused on worshiping our King and interceding on behalf of those who are intentionally spending their lives on expanding the Kingdom. We are asking you to provide an hour or two of worship and prayer focused solely on mission for those under your leadership, and to do this several times a year. During those times, we encourage you to build the agenda around encountering God as a global God and praying for missionaries you know and missional agencies you support.

Many of you may already be doing this on a regular basis. We would be so grateful if you would consider praying for us during those times. For specific prayer requests, please contact any of the staff members via our staff page.

If this is something you would like to begin doing but are not sure how, we would be honored to be a resource for you! The first step is to ask the Lord to assemble a leadership team. Over the next few weeks and months, we will be adding suggested themes and agendas to this section of our website as well as ideas to take your worship to the streets through acts of service. Please contact Josie Leung to be added to our update list, and we will notify you as new information is added.
